About

The Eternity Engine is an advanced Doom-engine source port maintained by James 'Quasar' Haley, descended from Simon 'fraggle' Howard's SMMU project. It's built with SDL2 and runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and other systems, and is actively maintained with CMake, Visual Studio, and Xcode build support.

How it differs from the original

Beyond vanilla Doom compatibility, Eternity adds ACS scripting (with many ZDoom-style enhancements), an EDF definition language for customizing monsters, sounds, and menus, portal rendering for skyboxes and fake-3D architecture, unlimited-resolution and PNG support, and built-in support for the Master Levels and No Rest for the Living episodes without extra command-line options; Heretic, Hexen, and Strife compatibility is still in progress.

Known limitations

  • feature: Heretic, Hexen, and Strife support is in-progress.
Requires original assets. Requires original DOOM game files (pak0.pak and pak1.pak) to run.
