About

Little Big Adventure (released in North America as Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure) is a 1994 action-adventure game developed by Adeline Software International, originally released on PC and later ported to several other platforms. TwinEngine (twin-e) is an open-source reimplementation of the engine for Little Big Adventure 1, started in 2002 and aiming for a modern, portable, and readable codebase. It's currently at beta stage with most gameplay features implemented, though features like the Holomap and menu management are still missing, and it requires the original LBA1 game files to run.

How it differs from the original

As a rewritten engine rather than the original 1994 code, it's still missing some features present in the original release, including the Holomap and full menu management, and it depends on the player's own copy of the original LBA1 game files (plus a separately-sourced audio file not included in the public release) rather than bundling any original assets.

Getting started

Download the public release build and copy its contents into your existing Little Big Adventure 1 installation directory, overwriting a few files as needed; you'll also need to source a required music/audio file separately, since it isn't bundled with the public release. Building from source instead requires the SDL and SDL_mixer libraries.

History

Development started in 2002 as a full rewrite of the original engine; with the original Little Big Adventure source code later becoming available, the project has focused on filling in the pieces still missing from TwinEngine.

Known limitations

  • features: Holomap and menu management features are missing.
Requires original assets. Requires Little Big Adventure 1 game files (HQR assets) to run.
