About
Space Station 13 (SS13) is a top-down, tile-based multiplayer action-RPG that originally released in 2003 on the freeware BYOND game engine. Unitystation is a free-to-play, Early Access multiplayer RPG rebuild of the cult classic Space Station 13, running outside the original BYOND engine. Players take one of dozens of station jobs — engineer, doctor, scientist, security, or the clown — while round-based antagonists such as saboteurs, cultists and changelings try to bring the station down; each round resets the station from scratch. It supports online cross-platform multiplayer on Windows, Linux and macOS.
How it differs from the original
It rebuilds Space Station 13 outside of the original BYOND platform entirely — the readme's own tagline is 'Finally Remade — No more dealing with BYOND' — so players no longer need the original BYOND client to play.
Getting started
It's playable for free through Steam (Early Access); the GitHub repo also includes a contribution guide for anyone who wants to build the project locally in Unity or contribute code changes.
History
Unitystation has been in active development since late 2016.
