About

Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed and published by Mojang Studios, first released as an early-access alpha in 2009 and formally released in November 2011, since ported to numerous platforms. Voxelands is a sandbox voxel-construction game forked from Minetest (itself inspired by earlier "voxel world" games like Infiniminer). Players can dig and place many kinds of blocks, items, and creatures in a fully destructible 3D world, building across both multiplayer servers and singleplayer worlds in multiple game modes. It's licensed under the GPLv3+ (with CC BY-SA 3.0 assets), built on the Irrlicht engine, and runs on Windows and Linux; development is currently halted.

How it differs from the original

Voxelands was forked from Minetest 0.3.x in 2013 and carries its own original textures, sounds, and models (credited to several named artists) under a separate CC BY-SA 3.0 license, rather than reusing Minetest's or Minecraft's assets.

Getting started

After building from source with CMake, the game is launched by running its executable from a terminal; default controls use WASD to move, the mouse to look and place/dig blocks, number keys 1-8 to switch items, and Shift/Space to sneak/jump, with additional keys for flying, chat, and the inventory.

History

Voxelands was forked from Minetest 0.3.x, itself created by Perttu Ahola in 2010-2011, and has been maintained separately by Lisa 'darkrose' Milne and other contributors since 2013.

Additional notes

License
Reusing Voxelands' original textures, sounds, or models in another project requires crediting Voxelands and linking to its website, per the CC BY-SA 3.0 attribution clause.
