About

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans is Blizzard Entertainment's 1994 real-time strategy game, the first entry in the Warcraft franchise, originally released for MS-DOS and later Mac OS. War1 is an in-progress C remake of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans that uses only the original game's *.WAR asset files rather than reimplementing the art. It currently supports pathfinding and unit movement, unit training, building construction, resource gathering by peasants and peons, fog of war, basic enemy AI, spells, and per-map feature configuration; a full AI opponent, cinematics, and save/load are still being developed. It requires an original (or demo) copy of the MS-DOS/shareware release to supply the DATA.WAR asset file.

How it differs from the original

War1 aims to be more than a straight recreation, intending to layer modern RTS conveniences on top of the original 1994 game, though the specific enhancements are still being built out alongside the core game.

Getting started

Playing requires the DATA.WAR asset file from an original or GOG copy of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (or the freely available demo version), placed in the project's assets folder; the project builds with GCC, Clang, or MSVC via its own build tool, and can also launch directly into a specific campaign mission or a predefined custom skirmish map via command-line options.

Known limitations

  • gameplay: AI implementation is still in development; cinematics and save/load features are not yet implemented.
Requires original assets. Requires DATA.WAR file from original Warcraft: Orcs & Humans MS-DOS or shareware version.
