About

Doom is a 1993 first-person shooter developed and published by id Software for MS-DOS, the first game in the Doom franchise, in which a space marine fights through hordes of undead humans and demons across the moons of Mars and into hell. Woof! is a modernized continuation of Lee Killough's MBF Doom source port, built on Team Eternity's 2004 WinMBF Windows port of MBF, aiming to bring MBF to current systems while staying close to the original's feel. It adds quality-of-life features such as arbitrary resolutions with dynamic resolution scaling, widescreen rendering, uncapped framerate with frame interpolation, adjustable field of view, and modern gamepad support with rumble and gyro aiming, and it requires the player's own Doom or Doom II game data to run.

How it differs from the original

Compared to the DOS-only original MBF.EXE, Woof! adds support for voxels (KVX format), 3D positional audio with an optional HRTF mode, multiple music backends (native MIDI, FluidSynth, a built-in OPL3 emulator), PNG graphics, extended map node formats and UDMF maps, and modding standards not available in 1990s Doom (DEHEXTRA, DSDHacked, UMAPINFO, MBF21), while keeping backward compatibility with original MBF.EXE savegames.

Getting started

Players supply their own Doom or Doom II game data; Woof! offers in-game cheat codes, command-line parameters, and a getting-started guide on its GitHub wiki, and it can automatically load additional mod files from configured autoload directories.

History

Woof! grew out of developer Fabian Greffrath's fondness for MBF, which taught him the 640x400 rendering technique that underpinned his earlier Crispy Doom source port; after relying on Team Eternity's WinMBF to study and debug MBF's logic, since the original only ran on MS-DOS, he grew frustrated that WinMBF was stuck on 32-bit systems with outdated SDL-1 libraries, prompting him to start this project. Many features were adapted from Chocolate Doom, PrBoom+/DSDA-Doom, and The Eternity Engine, with additional major contributions from community members rfomin, ceski, JNechaevsky, and MrAlaux.

Requires original assets. Woof! requires original Doom game data to run; compatible with both Doom and Doom II.

Additional notes

Trivia
The project's name comes from the Doom logo, which reads 'Wood' upside down; 'Woof' was chosen instead as a nod to Doom's marine protagonist being the 'Marine's Best Friend.'
