Magic: The Gathering Online is Wizards of the Coast's official digital adaptation of the Magic: The Gathering card game, launched in 2002 for Windows, using a virtual economy to preserve the collectible aspect of physical cards. XMage is a full rules-enforcement engine for playing Magic against other players or AI, supporting over 32,000 unique cards and more than 91,000 reprints across official sets plus custom sets like Star Wars. It runs cross-platform on Windows, Linux, and macOS, supports two-player duels or multiplayer formats like Commander with up to 10 players, drafts and tournaments with up to 16 players, a deck editor, and a Glicko-based player rating system; the engine is designed to be cheat-proof via server-side rule enforcement, backed by roughly 9000 unit tests covering about 80% of the codebase.
Getting started
Download from the official site and run the launcher, which requires Java 8 or later; running the 'server' app locally and connecting to it lets you play against AI opponents. Public servers are also available for playing against other people online.
