About
Fallout 2 is the sequel to the original Fallout, a post-apocalyptic role-playing game in which the player searches for the Garden of Eden Creation Kit to save their village, roughly 80 years after the first game's events. Fallout 2 Community Edition is a from-scratch, fully working reimplementation of Fallout 2's engine that reproduces the original gameplay while adding engine bugfixes and quality-of-life improvements. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, requires the player to own the original Fallout 2 game data (via GOG, Epic Games or Steam), and partially supports popular total-conversion mods such as Nevada and Sonora.
How it differs from the original
It aims to keep the original gameplay intact while fixing engine bugs and adding quality-of-life features. It does not yet support total-conversion mods that depend on Sfall's extended features, such as Fallout Et Tu and Olympus 2207, and mods like Resurrection and Yesterday are untested.
Getting started
Players must own a legitimate copy of Fallout 2 and supply its data files alongside the engine build. On Windows the engine is a drop-in replacement executable; Linux, macOS, Android and iOS each have their own setup steps, including extracting game data from the GOG installer with innoextract where needed. Android and iOS use a touch-based, trackpad-style control scheme to stand in for the original's mouse-driven interface.
Additional notes
- License
- The engine's source code is released under the Sustainable Use License rather than a standard open-source license.
- Dev note
- The stated top contribution priority is integrating fixes and features from the Sfall modding tool, and large-scale refactors are discouraged to stay in sync with a related 'Reference Edition' codebase.
