About

Quake II is a 1997 first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Activision, following a space marine's war against the alien-machine Strogg after a crash-landing on their homeworld. Yamagi Quake II is an enhanced, actively maintained client for Quake II focused on offline and co-op play. It keeps the original gameplay and graphics unchanged while fixing many bugs from the last official release and adding widescreen support, high-framerate handling, an OpenAL-based sound backend, modern controller support, and a modern OpenGL 3.2 renderer; it's officially supported on FreeBSD, Linux, and Windows, with community support for macOS and other Unix-likes.

How it differs from the original

It is fully 64-bit clean, unlike most other Quake II source ports, and is built on top of Icculus Quake II (itself based on Quake II 3.21) rather than the original codebase directly. The official mission-pack addons (The Reckoning, Ground Zero, and the Three Wave Capture the Flag mod) are maintained as separate repositories rather than bundled in.

Getting started

Requires the original Quake II game data files. Official release builds with source tarballs and prebuilt Windows binaries are published on the project's homepage, alongside unsupported CI builds for Linux, macOS, and Windows generated from every commit.
