About
Quake II is a 1997 first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Activision, in which a lone space marine wages war on the alien-machine Strogg after a botched invasion. Yamagi Quake II Remaster is an experimental fork of Yamagi Quake II that adds support for Quake II Enhanced (the Nightdive Studios remaster), along with experimental loaders for assets from many other id Tech-family games such as Half-Life, Anachronox, Kingpin, Heretic II, SiN, and Daikatana. It is alpha-quality software: Windows 64-bit binaries are provided, the save format is unstable between releases, and the macOS build is only build-tested, not run-verified.
How it differs from the original
Unlike the standard Yamagi Quake II client, this fork takes a less conservative approach to new features and isn't focused solely on Quake II — it adds model, texture, map, and sound format support spanning a dozen-plus other games, though full multiplayer compatibility with the official KEX remaster engine is explicitly stated as not a goal.
Getting started
Alpha Windows 64-bit binaries are published on the project's releases page; building from a GitHub source-code ZIP requires extra steps since GitHub archives don't include git submodules, so a full git clone or the documented minimal setup is recommended instead. Quake II ReRelease localization additionally requires a specific localization data file placed in the game's root directory.
Known limitations
- compatibility: Alpha release with unstable save format that may change between releases.
- platform: MacOS build is only build tested and run is not verified.
Additional notes
- Scope
- Beyond Quake II, the project experimentally supports assets and maps from many other id Tech-lineage games, including Anachronox, Kingpin, Heretic II, SiN, Daikatana, and several unofficial mod projects like Oblivion and Infinity: The Kai'Ren Threat.
