DXX-Rebirth is a source port of Descent and Descent II, built on the earlier D1X/D2X ports, which themselves derive from the original Descent source code and LDescent. It aims to modernize the games for current PCs — OpenGL rendering, broad joystick support, UDP-based multiplayer — while staying true to the original design.
How it differs from the original
It adds features not in the 1995 originals, including OpenGL rendering with optional transparency, colored lighting, texture filtering and anti-aliasing, custom music playback from local files, and an improved, less glitchy demo-recording system, while remaining compatible with the original games' AddOn packs, expansions, and third-party levels, as well as save files and demos from the DOS versions.
Getting started
Multiplayer runs over UDP/IP across LAN or the internet (default port 42424, configurable via menu, command line, or .ini files); hosting a direct-IP game requires forwarding that port on your router, though this isn't necessary when hosting on LAN or via the built-in Online Tracker.
