About
Command & Conquer (1995) and Command & Conquer: Red Alert (1996) are real-time strategy games developed and published by Westwood Studios; Dune 2000 (1998) is a partial remake of Dune II developed by Intelligent Games and published by Westwood. OpenRA is a free, GPLv3-licensed real-time strategy engine for early Westwood classics, shipping mods that reimagine Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and Dune 2000. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, supports online multiplayer, and is actively developed.
How it differs from the original
The bundled mods are described as reimaginings rather than exact reproductions, and the engine adds community tooling the originals lacked: custom rules, Lua-scripted missions, a Mod SDK for building new games, and dedicated multiplayer servers.
Getting started
Builds are distributed through the project's website at openra.net; the project wiki has a Playing the Game guide for multiplayer, and a separate install guide covers setting up a development build from source.
