About
Wipeout is a 1995 racing video game developed and published by Psygnosis for the PlayStation, a launch title for the console in Europe and the first installment in the Wipeout series; it was later ported to MS-DOS and Saturn, and re-released on PSN in 2007. This is a Dreamcast port of the wipEout Rewrite project, itself a re-implementation of the 1995 PSX racer Wipeout, running natively on real Dreamcast hardware via a custom CDI disc image. It's described as feature-complete and close to a locked 60 FPS, with 24-bit color, extended draw distance, and full music, sound, and VMU save support.
How it differs from the original
Compared to the base wipEout Rewrite project, this port adds a 16:9 anamorphic widescreen display option, restores PSX-original collision behavior, and includes a bonus menu that unlocks the Rapier ship class and a bonus circuit.
Getting started
Playing requires a real Sega Dreamcast console — the author does not support playing via emulator or a GDEMU flash cart. A CDI disc image with cover art is provided in the project's GitHub releases, though original game data files must still be extracted and supplied separately, as described in the project's build notes.
Known limitations
- compatibility: Playing in emulation is not supported; GDEMU is not supported.
Additional notes
- Note
- The author will close any GitHub issue related to emulator or GDEMU compatibility without reading it, since only real Dreamcast hardware is supported.
