Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Decompilation

ActiveUnplayablePS

About

This is a work-in-progress decompilation project that aims to reconstruct the original source code of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night through static and dynamic analysis of its PS1/PSP/Saturn binaries, producing code that compiles byte-for-byte identical to the original. It currently supports four versions of the game: the US PS1 release (SLUS-00067), an unreleased Japanese PS1 build, the European PSP release bundled with Dracula X Chronicles, and the Saturn port. The repository does not include any game assets or assembly code — a legitimately owned copy of the game is required to extract what's needed to build it.

How it differs from the original

As a byte-for-byte matching decompilation rather than a reimplementation, the project aims to produce code functionally identical to the original binaries rather than a modified or expanded version of the game.

Getting started

A build guide and a decompilation guide are linked from the project, along with an online progress tracker; a legitimately owned copy of the original game is required to supply the assets and data needed to compile it.

Requires original assets. Decompilation project; prior copy of the game required to extract necessary assets.

Additional notes

Tools
The project credits and builds on several open-source decompilation tools, including mips2c, splat, asm-differ, decomp-permuter, maspsx, decomp.me, and frogress.
